What is left behind when we grow? What do we shed, and what do we become?

Exuvia is a fine art nude series that explores the symbolic and emotional process of transformation — a visual meditation on identity, vulnerability, and rebirth.

The title comes from the Latin word exuviae, meaning “that which is stripped off” — an apt metaphor for the layers we leave behind in moments of profound change. In this series, I set out to portray five distinct stages of inner metamorphosis, using the human body not as an object, but as a symbol of the soul’s evolution.

The Concept

Each image in the EXUVIA series is carefully constructed to reflect a moment of psychological or emotional shedding. Rather than tell a literal story, the series invites the viewer into a quiet, contemplative space — one where textures, light, and posture carry the weight of meaning.

I chose to work in a chiaroscuro style, echoing the visual language of the old masters. The subdued light and sculptural shadows are not only aesthetic choices, but emotional ones: they reflect the vulnerability and strength that coexist in these moments of transformation.

The Five Works

While each piece stands alone, together they form a symbolic cycle:

  1. The Skin That Remains - A moment of tension — still caught between past and future, the figure stands with the weight of an invisible past pressing against their back.

  1. Veil of Becoming - A sense of emergence. The light is soft, almost hesitant, and the figure is partially turned — not fully arrived, not fully departed.

  1. Empty Shell - A haunting stillness. The human form is present, but the presence feels distant — as if the soul has momentarily stepped out.

  2. Flesh Remembered - Touch and memory intertwine. Here, the image explores what our bodies carry long after the moment has passed.

  1. Return to Light - The final image brings a sense of release. Stripped of all ornament and resistance, the figure returns to light — whole, vulnerable, free.

Why I Created EXUVIA

This series is deeply personal. It was born from reflection, silence, and the need to explore the paradox between exposure and strength. Creating EXUVIA challenged me not only as a visual artist, but as a human being — pushing me to sit with discomfort, to be honest, and to embrace imperfection.

I hope these works resonate with anyone who has ever felt the weight of shedding a skin — and the liberation that can come from doing so.

EXUVIA is more than a series of photographs. It is an invitation to feel, to remember, and to witness the quiet force of change.
